Weddings are a very joyous time in a family’s life. They are a reason to bring together friends and family from all over the world. There is quite a lot of pressure during a wedding for the sister of the groom however.

The sister of the groom is generally asked to give a speech for her brother that helps shed some light on their relationship. It can be quite a daunting task when you are asked to give a speech at the wedding. There are plenty of sister of the groom speech examples that you can use for your brother’s wedding.

Celebrate the joyous occasion

There are many ways that you can start your speech off. Make sure that you write it down, first and foremost. This is best because even if you get nervous and draw a blank, you will still have it written on paper or notecards to job your memory. It is easy to forget when you have had a few glasses of champagne to calm your nerves too.

One type of sister of the groom speech sample would be to start off by introducing yourself. Many of the guests may not have met you yet because they could be part of the bride’s guests. This could include many of her friends and family members that are new faces to you.

The speech can go something like this, “Hello and good evening, ladies and gents. I would like to thank everyone for being here and I would like to introduce myself since I don’t know many of you out there and you probably are wondering who I am as well. I am the honored sister of the very handsome groom and I would like to welcome all of you to such a joyous and amazing occasion. I am eternally grateful to be here in the company of such beautiful and amazing people. I am so glad that you all got a chance to make it to the bride and groom’s beautiful and happy day!”

This is a great introduction to your speech. The guests will feel honored that you are welcoming them and they will want to know even more about you once your speech is over. They will hang on every word while they wait for you to continue on your topics. There is much to cover, but you will need to make it as short and sweet as you can. There are a lot of people that have to talk at the wedding so speed is important.

Also, keep your speech exciting and uplifting. No one wants to fall asleep in the middle of it! Once again, highlight how happy you are in the introduction so people will feel your great energy.

In Honour of your Brother and His Partner

There is quite a bit that you can say about your brother and his partner. You will probably want to start in a way that highlights him first since you probably know him much better than his new bride.

Why not try to start the middle of your speech like this, “I am incredibly happy for my brother today. I was a little emotional this morning when I realized that my baby brother is really growing up. This isn’t like the day he left for 1st grade or the night he graduated from college; this is his wedding to his beautiful bride. I am incredibly happy that I got to stand close to him today as he exchanged such amazing vows with his bride. The two of them are perfect for one another and it is so great to see him have such a love like this. I couldn’t have picked a better bride for him. This day is so special to all of us and I am beyond honored to be here and to be giving this speech to my wonderful brother.”

Once you have the guests’ attention once again, it may be time to be funny or to be sentimental. You never can be too sure what kind of crowd you will get so make sure that whatever you say, try to keep it as clean as possible, especially if the wedding is at a church.

Memories of Childhood

Many of these sisters of the groom speeches will involve flashbacks to when the two of you were children. You can go all the way back to when you were playing together on the playground or in school together. A lot of the guests will probably want to hear a little about your family history in that regard.

If you want to do a family speech, you can try something like this: “My brother and I have not always been the best of friends. According to him, we have been fighting since we learned to talk. That may be an exaggeration, but it seems to ring true based on my memories of our childhood. We always played board games on Friday nights and I wanted to beat him so badly. He is clearly the smart one and he was always winning. I’m a sore loser, so you can imagine how bad that hurt when he would win. He knew how much it hurt my feelings when I lost so he would always play one more game with me. Somehow, as if it were magic, he would end up losing the next round. I was never sure if he did it on purpose or I just got really good in those few minutes. On Christmas morning, I would always wake him up to go downstairs with me as early as possible to see what awesome stuff we had gotten. We never woke our parents up and we would just play with all of the cool toys and stuff. He has always been my buddy even when we were fighting. He has always been there for me even when he was beating me at board games. I don’t know how to tell you all that I am the luckiest girl in the world for having this amazing man as my brother.”

If you include bits and pieces about your childhood, the guests may even shed some tears.

Make it funny and charming

You can make your speech funny and charming. If you have gathered that your audience isn’t exactly into the dirty jokes, you can always joke about your childhood and growing up together. There are always funny moments that the two of you have shared that can get the whole crowd laughing. Perhaps the two of you shared some really embarrassing moments; you can share those as well.

Your funny sister of the groom speech can go something like this: “The first time that my brother told me he had a crush on a girl; I was appalled because she was hideous! He was so nervous to ask me for any type of advice about her because I was not a fan of her from the start. How would he ever get big sister’s approval? I found out because he was pacing outside looking so nervous. I went outside and asked him what was wrong. He told me he had a crush on a girl and didn’t know what to do. I told him to go for it and just ask her out. So he did. And he was rejected by the really ugly girl! He told me it was all my fault and I suppose it was because I told him to do it. Just like I told him to ask his lovely bride out for the first time. When it comes to giving dating advice, clearly I have gotten better with it over time.”

Giving a speech at your brother’s wedding is incredibly important to him and the rest of the family. Once you have just the right speech, you can make everyone at the wedding love your brother just as you do!
